Happi Body Co: Plastic Free Face Cleansing Melt Review

Rare Beauty, the fabulous women-led natural beauty retailer, has got some exciting news this week: a new brand is hitting their shelves!  And this one is extra exciting, as it delivers plastic free packaging as well as a clean and high quality formula -- say hello to Happi Body Co!

(P.S.  Haven't heard of Rare Beauty and all they have to offer?  Head over and check out my review of their service and brand line up from when they launched, or check out one of my features that show off some of the amazing natural, vegan, cruelty free, and organic goodies they stock!)

Happi Body Co is a Cumbria based natural beauty brand with a focus on full transparency -- that means honesty about "environmental impacts, ingredients used and business motives."  With an increase of organic and 'natural' ranges being announced by businesses trying to cash in on the move to cleaner products (I'm looking at you Garnier), this ethos is especially important!

Founder Lisa is a graduate of the highly respected Formula Botanica, and her brand is dedicated to bringing science based products to market that are nontoxic in both their ingredients and in their packaging.  Her vision is based on three guiding principles:

1) Clean ingredients choices matter.  I use ingredients that are natural and clean.
(using plant butters, oils, actives and aromaceuticals)

2) Clean packaging choices matter.  Containers and packaging must be planet friendly.
(a range where most packaging is 100% biodegradable)

3) Clean business motives matter.  I want to promote the importance of positive self image and avoid the cliches that prey on our insecurities about how we look.
(focus on selfcare, and no using images, words, or tactics that tap into body image insecurities)

Sound good??  I agree!  Which is why when Rare Beauty asked if I wanted to test out Happi Body Co's launch product, the Face Cleansing Melt (†), I happily said yes please!

Transparency Key:
 Gifted product

No matter how I have received a product, whether it has been purchased with my own money, gifted by a brand, been subsidized by a brand, won, gifted by friends/family, or purchased with a gift voucher, my approach is always the same -- honesty, integrity, and highlighting both the good and the bad.  You can find more information on Disclosures and Privacy here.

Welcome to the future of plastic free skincare. The Cleansing & Hydrating Melt by Happi Body Co is the UK’s first natural facial cleanser presented in a biodegradable container. The cleanser is a powerhouse of 14 plant oils, butters and natural active ingredients. Skin is gently yet deeply cleansed. Sweet orange and crisp lavender uplift the senses.

I was so thankful to be gifted the Face Cleansing Melt, as I find it to be a totally unique product that is fighting to change the way the industry thinks about clean beauty.  The gift set contains a full size pot of the waterless cleanser, a bamboo spoon to apply the melt in a safe and sanitary way, and an organic cotton cleansing cloth to gently exfoliate while removing the product.  Plus, tucked into the cloth is a super cute and aromatic sprig of lavender just to set the mood for what is in store!

I honestly was blown away by the presentation of this gift set, as it was done with so much care.  Most of us associate 'high end' or 'luxury' products with a lot of fancy packaging, bells and whistles, and collectible cases, but I find Happi Body Co's simplicity elegant and stunning in its own way.  The use of dried botanicals, the delicate touch of the cardboard label wrapped around the Face Cleansing Melt, the mulberry tone of the biodegradable lid... Everything comes together to create an indulgent experience that doesn't cost the earth.

Before I even get to the cleansing melt itself, I just want to spend a moment talking about the packaging.  I mentioned this is a plastic free product, but it is worth mentioned what the material actually is: Sulapac, the eco award winning competitor of plastic that is making waves.  Made of a combination of wood chips and biodegradable natural binders, Sulapac brings many of the benefits of plastic (such as being water and oil resistant and having the potential for mass production) without the reliance on fossil fuels or the inability to safely and effectively degrade.  When you have finished the product, you can choose to either repurpose the pot (which is what I will be doing) or "drop it in your compost bin or depending upon your local recycling facilities, you could send it to landfill. [...] If you have local industrial composting facilities, it will be pretty much gone in a few months!"

And not only that, but it is actually pretty eye catching!  The contrast between the warm magenta top and the muted white bottom is very stylish, and the colours give it an almost romantic vibe.  Plus, I love that you can see the natural wood pulp in the jar, as it really gives that little extra reminder that what you are using is truly guilt free and planet friendly.

And once you open this lovely lid, you are in for your next treat -- the uplifting aroma of sea buckthorn and sweet orange, the calming hit of soothing lavender, and the warming and mouthwatering note of cocoa butter...  It is just a sensation that has to be experienced.  I know Happi Body Co recommends indulging just a couple of times a week, but it smells so delicious that I am always tempted to use nightly!

The melt is a lovely shade of orange, and you can bet it will be included in tons of future "Texture Tuesday" posts over on Instagram!  It reminds me of a dessert, or creamy marmalade, and just the look of it makes me feel happy.  Bright, cheerful, and the epitomy of positivity!  And the consistency is just as good, and surprisingly delicate for such a rich looking product.  Rather than feeling heavy on the skin and leaving a waxy residue like many cleansing balms, Happi Body Co's Face Cleansing Melt contains skin friendly emulsifiers that leave you feeling fresh and silky smoothe without leaving any residual build up on your face (especially when you use the tightly woven cloth to remove the milky melt!).

Another success is that despite my skin being semi-sensitive and congestion prone, this formula hasn't given me any issues -- no break outs, no sensitivity, no redness, no negatives whatsoever!  And while I was doubtful about the claim that you don't need a moisturizer after use, I was proved wrong -- my skin genuinely felt nourished enough by the cleanser that I often found myself skipping that next step entirely!  I think come summer this will actually be a skin saviour for me, as I often struggle in warmer weather with striking the right balance between a healthy moisturized face and not erupting in spots.  Having a multi-functional product that solves that will be invaluable to me!

I even put on some makeup to see how the cleanser handled more than just daily grime, and I was thrilled to find it just melted away along with the product.  I did have to go in on my eyes a second time, but otherwise it was just a one and done situation!  I hate faffing about before bed, so the ease of just rinsing away makeup was definitely a big plus.

Overall, my experience using Happi Body Co's Face Cleansing Melt has been incredible.  I am really impressed by the overall design of the product, all the little details that go into the gift set, the fragrant aroma that works to uplift the mind, the easy to apply (and to remove!) consistency of the melt, and the results I have been seeing so far.  My skin loves the formula and feels so smooth and is definitely more radiant than ever.  The fact I have not had a single spot pop up while using this is also a huge win.  I will need more time using the cleanser before I can share my final thoughts, but I will definitely give an update in an empties post when I have finished this jar.  But I suspect it will be rave reviews all around, and that I will be picking up another pot as soon as this one is finished!

If you are wanting to pick up one for yourself to try out, you can now find Happi Body Co over on Rare Beauty, and there will be a special promotion running all week to celebrate the new launch!  If you head over now, you can enjoy 10% off your purchase - and trust me, it's well worth trying!
