Organic Bamboo Clothing: Boody Review

Looking for sustainable fashion and not sure where to start?  Why not check out Boody and their organic bamboo clothing line!  With ethical basics, eco friendly activewear, and responsible options for men, women, and babies, this is a natural brand that offers style, comfort, and accessibility.  And today I'm sharing my review of two of their staple pieces!

Boody Sustainable Clothing - Shaper Bra and Active 3/4 Leggings

The Brand: Boody

Boody is an eco business that is dedicated to providing wearable, well made, timeless clothing that doesn't cost the earth.  Co-founders Shaun and David started the brand in Australia, dreaming of creating only essentials.  Their slow fashion approach is one I very much appreciate, but when it comes to all their other efforts I can't help but be impressed by this sustainable line of underwear, bras, loungewear, leggings, tops, and babywear.

"Boody thoughtfully fits your everyday life with the softest, most comfortable clothing essentials. We do this using naturally grown, organic bamboo. From the fabrics we use, to how we design, craft and deliver our products; we work to deliver easy-to-wear pieces you can feel good about."

Not only is Boody certified by Ecocert (the leader in Organic Certification globally), they conduct SGS tests on the garments to ensure the fabrics meet health and safety standards everywhere they sell, meet compliance with WRAP (the Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production which ensures garments are produced under humane, lawful, and ethical conditions), have their yarn certified by OCIA (the Organic Crop Improvement Association), and are certified under ISO 14001 & ISO 9001 (meaning Boody's factories are in compliance with regulations that reduce environmental impact and that their garments have consistent quality for customers).

Boody doesn't just make claims about their practices - they back them up with independent regulators and certifications, and this is something I really love about the brand.  Plus, they are pretty transparent about the process they use for turning bamboo into fabric.  I've touched on the potential issues surrounding bamboo textiles before, so the fact that Boody addresses how they transform the raw material into their cozy clothes is brilliant.

Once the organic panda friendly bamboo has been grown and harvested, it is then soaked in a solution to soften it and get it ready to be dehydrated and ground into a material that can be turned into thread.  While many bamboo brands skip talking about their process, Boody discloses that they use a close-loop system, meaning all liquid is recycled and the solvents are captured so they don't end up polluting the planet.  Win!

But what about the clothes themselves??

I was asked to choose two pieces to try out, and Boody kindly sent them my way - ever since they arrived I have been wearing them, washing them, and going about my day to day in them to put them to the test.

Boody bamboo clothing - Shaper Bra and Active 3/4 Leggings

Boody Shaper Bra:

I'll be honest - I don't often wear a bra these days.  The only time I cover up the ladies is when I'm going out, and that's only because it is so cold out!  However, I loved the sound of the Boody Shaper Bra as it doesn't have any uncomfortable underwire, is free from any padding, and has no fastenings to faff about with.  It's like a bralette but better!

"Boody creates affordable luxury by crafting everyday essentials and underwear from viscose derived from bamboo. The result is a silky smooth base layer that keeps you cool and comfortable with seam-free stretch. Our bamboo fabric maintains it’s shape and is great for sensitive skin. Bamboo fibers are naturally smooth and round with no sharp spurs to irritate skin. Try the silk touch of the Boody Shaper Bra for yourself. We’re certain you’ll be back for more."

The bamboo Shaper Bra comes in seven colours, all of which are lovely pastel and neutral tones.  Boody offers the basics like black, white, and grey along with pinky beige, navy blue, forest green, and a sandy tan.  I actually found it tricky to choose just one, and I will definitely be coming back to pick out another in future - maybe then I will grab the two pack so I have double the fun!

Boody Shaper Bra in Dark Olive

In the end I opted for the Dark Olive as the shade just really connected with me, and I thought it would pair well with strappy summer tops come the warmer weather.  The bra is really trendy while still being a classic piece that will grow with me, and I was immediately impressed by just how soft the fabric is.  It's unlike anything I have ever worn - ultra thin, stretchy, and almost velvety.  I could actually see myself putting the Shaper Bra on during the day as it's so cozy!  Never in my life would I have dreamed of describing a bra like that, so Boody has definitely created something special here.

Like I said, there are no wires, no clips, no extra pieces here, just pure silky soft material that has been designed to fit snugly and comfortably.  There is a tag initially to provide wash instructions and general information, but it has been designed to tear away so you have a truly seamless experience.  For someone who hates the sensation of labels, this is PERFECT.

The fabric is subtly ribbed which gives it a nice flexible feeling, and I find this fits true to size which is great.  Though it doesn't offer much in the way of support I love how natural it feels on my skin and how little I notice it.  I could actually forget I'm wearing anything!  It's super breathable too, so I think this will be a total game changer come summer.  Usually I go for sports bras or bralettes, but I often find things getting a bit moist (especially when it's hot out), so I'm excited to see if Boody keeps me cool and dry when the weather changes again.

Overall, I am loving the Boody Shaper Bra and I am so happy I have found a sustainable option that is kind to my skin, the planet, and my bank balance.  And the fact that I can still machine wash it is a huge bonus!  It's holding up great so far, and I can see myself wearing this for many years to come.

Materials: 79% viscose made from organically-grown bamboo (from FSC-certified fields in the Sichuan Province of China), 15% nylon, 6% elastane

Boody Active 3/4 Leggings:

If you know me, you know that I basically live in leggings.  Ever since I discovered there were alternatives to stockings and jeans (seriously, 16-year-old me was over the moon!), I never looked back.  I've tried all sorts, from faux denim jeggings and spandex workout style gear to cotton, polyester, and hemp everyday basics.  You might call me the queen of leggings.

So of course Boody had a lot of live up to.  Did they meet the mark??

"You talked, we listened,  The all new Boody Active Mid Legging takes the legendary comfort of our Basic Legging and takes it to a whole new level.  The Active Legging is thicker and offers hugging support in a mid-rise waist that comes up to just below the belly button.  While the Basic Legging is a fantastic option for layering, lounging, or as a base layer; the Active Legging excels as a standalone tight that you can wear for light exercise or around town.  Same comfort, same commitment to sustainable clothing, but with all-new features technically designed for an active lifestyle."

I think Boody met my standards and exceeded my expectations.  The Active 3/4 Leggings are a great staple piece, and I find they work great for everyday wear or for exercise - perfect for someone like me who doesn't like having items restricted to specific occasions and who regularly goes hiking in flowy dresses.  This is clothing made for anything life throws at you, and I'm all about that!

Wearing Boody bamboo clothing - Active 3/4 Leggings and Shaper Bra - along with Critically Endangered Socks and The Spark Company

Boody only offers these in one colour (black), and while this is what I would go for personally, I do think it would be great to see more options available in future.  Maybe one to match each Shaper Bra shade?  That being said, I love that they chose to go for such a classic colour as I find it so wearable. I can pair with dresses, tanks, overwise t-shirts... Whatever I want! Since there are no vivid patterns or bold tones, I can mix and match with pretty much everything in my wardrobe.

I sized up with these leggings as I know activewear tends to fit much more snug than standard clothing, and I'm really glad I made this decision. The Active 3/4 Leggings are definitely form fitting, with a tight but comfortable grip that makes them ideal for moving about in. Despite the thicker material, I find these are breathable and do a good job of keeping sweat at bay. Plus, you don't need to worry about anything slipping down or bunching up thanks to the support provided by the design, and I haven't had to pull them up at all as there isn't really any gapping at the waist which is a big plus.

As a shorter girl, I find the "mid-calf length" falls a little lower for me personally, but I actually prefer that so it's not an issue. I also find the mid-rise waist super flattering, and I really like the stitching detail as well - the fusion of aesthetic and practicality in Boody's leggings is fantastic, and I can't help but appreciate all the details and thought that went into this piece. I mean, there is a hidden pocket for goodness sake! If that isn't innovation for leggings, I don't know what is.

I'm loving Boody and their sustainable organic bamboo clothing, and I am so thrilled I got a chance to test out some of their eco friendly options.  Overall, I have to say I am impressed by the quality, fit, and versatility of the range, and I will definitely be coming back to try out more!

One thing I will say is that the size range isn't super inclusive - the pieces start at an XS and go up to an XL, so if you are needing sizes smaller or larger than sadly these are not available.  I would love to see Boody expand the collection to offer more options in future, as I truly think everyone should be able to experience this line of sustainable staples.

Have you tried Boody yet?  I would love to know what your favourite pieces are - anything I should check out in future??  And if you haven't yet, I would love to know what you think of choosing more sustainable options when it comes to fashion.  Do you think ethical clothing is something you want to start trying yourself?  Let me know! xx
