Kathleen Natural Skincare Review *

I adore capsule ranges, but I also love when a brand offers everything you could possibly need - a one stop shop for all your skincare!  And that's something Kathleen offers.  From cleansing brushes and massage oils to toners and serums, there is so much to choose from.

About Kathleen Natural:

Kathleen Natural is a British brand that focuses on creating high performance products that are free from synthetic nasties.  This natural beauty brand was created in Royal Leamington Spa in 2014, and has been crafting fabulous formulas ever since.  The range now contains a selection of cruelty free skincare, bath and body treatments, and beauty tools, and each aims to "transform YOUR SKIN’S FUTURE, enabling you to live healthily and happily in your own perfect rhythm" while also promising 100% natural goodness.  Their range of skincare and bath products is hypoallergenic, 100% natural, and contains organic ingredients licensed by Soil Association.

"The entire range is formulated using a blend of precious plants, marine extracts and essential oils, sourced from all corners of the world – from Europe to Africa, America to Asia – without the inclusion of any harmful artificial chemicals"

I've already talked a lot about how much I love Kathleen's bubble bath, but today I want to shine the spotlight on their skincare products, including the cleanser, toner, serum, and body oil.  Are these green goodies as addictive as the bath and shower gel?  Find out below!

Kathleen Natural Skincare Review:

Cleansing Lotion:

Kathleen's Cleansing Lotion is a 100% natural and 80% organic lightweight formula that is suitable for all skin types, and it's especially fab for those with congestion prone skin as it's not heavy at all!  Packed with six active botanical ingredients, including tamanu, rose water, and avocado, Kathleen Natural's cleanser aims to purify as well as repair.

"A good cleanser leaving your skin feels fresh, clean and soft without any dryness. // This intelligent formula is packed with 6 active botanical ingredients, gives you a gentle clean and instantly hydrates your skin. You will never feel too dry after face wash."

The cleansing lotion does not have a strong scent, but it is unique - very slightly sweet, which was not what I was originally expecting.  For most products, I prefer distinct scents (of roses, or earthy frankincense, or uplifting neroli...) or else I'd rather it be fragrance free.  But this one is much more understated and hard to pin down.  Despite that it is very refreshing, and of course the aroma doesn't affect how the formula feels on the skin.

Kathleen Natural Skincare Review - Cleansing Lotion

Kathleen's cleanser is thin with a smooth texture, lightweight, and super easy to use since it is not oily.  It applies nicely, spreading evenly across the face and gently nourishing your skin as you use it. I love that I can just rinse it off without the need for a muslin, as there are days I prefer to avoid exfoliation altogether, and this has a consistency that allows me to quickly wash off and not scrub.  Plus I hate cleansers that leave a residue on the skin, as my congestion prone face always breaks out after, so the fact that this fully wipes away is brilliant!

This vegan friendly formula is ideal for summer, as I can wash off the grime of the day, soothe my skin after being in the sun all day, and get it all fresh and ready for another warm day - all without any fuss! This has been a lovely discovery so far, and I will continue to test it out as the months go by to see how it fairs when it gets colder and my skin needs more TLC.

Ingredients: Aqua, organic vegetable glycerin***, organic tamanu (calophyllum inophyllum) seed oil***, organic avocado (persea gratissima) oil***, organic rosa damascena flower water***, organic lavandula angustifolia flower water***, emulsifying wax (cetearyl alcohol & polysorbate 60)*, potassium oleate**, palm stearic acid*, xanthan gum*, lemon (citrus limon) extract*, potassium citrate*, citric acid*, potassium cocoate**, benzyl alcohol*, dehydroacetic acid*, benzoic acid*, sorbic acid*, parfum ***licensed by Soil Association **organic origin *natural plant origin

Tonifying Mist:

80% organic, vegan friendly, and shortlisted for an award last year, I had a good feeling about this when I first received it inside a Love Lula Beauty Box.  After a quick check of the ingredients to see if the mist contained primarily floral waters or essential oils (my semi-sensitive skin has issues with sprays that have a lot of EOs), I was set to start spritzing!

The alcohol-free formula is packed with gentle botanical extracts to hydrate, soothe, heal and revitalise the skin. With continued use, this toner helps to calm inflammation and reduce redness.

The mist has the same signature scent as the Cleansing Lotion - that unique slightly sweet smell that I just can't quite figure out.   And while I am not a huge fan of the smell, the Tonifying Mist is very fresh and feels nice and light on the skin.  I do wish it had a more fruity or floral aroma, but it's great if you need something free from strong smells.

Kathleen Natural Skincare Review - Tonifying Mist

Kathleen's toner sprays very evenly and comes out in a lovely fine mist, making this a great pick me up if you are feeling warm or just need a boost.  I love how cooling it is on the skin, and I find it fairly hydrating too which is a big plus.  It's actually great as a makeup setting spray in particular I find, as it's so refreshing without being overly wet or sticky.  For me, there is nothing worse than a toner that feels tacky when it dries down, so I was happy to find this wasn't the case with the Tonifying Mist.  Instead, it offers a rejuvenating treatment that feels fab.

The Tonifying Mist is calming, rebalancing, and definitely worth checking out.  I mean, it was shortlisted in the Pure Beauty Awards for a reason, right??  Intrigued?  Keep reading to the end for a chance to win a bottle of your very own!

Ingredients: Aqua, organic vegetable glycerin***, organic chamomile (anthemis nobilis) flower water***, aloe barbadenesis extract*, lemon (citrus limon) extract*, benzyl alcohol*, dehydroacetic acid*, benzoic acid*, sorbic acid*, parfum ***licensed by Soil Association *natural plant origin

Amazing White:

When I think of serum, I think of a clear aqueous liquid that sinks in quickly or an oil based formula that targets the inner layers of the skin, but Kathleen has opened me up to yet another option - a light lotion that is the perfect in between!

"A serum that can change your skin’s future.  A tailor-made formula that contains over 12 natural extracts which specifically help skin look more radiant and bright. The enriched organic extracts provide intense hydration and reduces the appearance of dark spots, evens tone, and feels silky smooth."

My first reaction to this was to think the packaging makes this look pretty high end.  It combines a gorgeous royal blue/purple with reflective silver writing, and it really makes it stand out as something special.

Kathleen Natural Skincare Review - Amazing White Serum

Amazing White has a pump that provides the perfect amount for application, meaning you don't have to worry about using too much or too little.  The serum has such an interesting consistency, as it is fairly thick but very silky.  The smell is similar to the other skincare items, but with a bit more of a traditional lotion scent - you know the one I mean??  It hits the front of your nose and has something very familiar and nostalgic about it.

When applied, you'll notice an instant difference in your skin as it becomes impossibly soft and smooth.  It feels very nourishing as well which is brilliant, as you could use this as an all in one skin savior and let the blend of strawberry, licorice, cranberry, papaya, hyaluronic acid, and apricot oil work their magic.

Unfortunately, I noticed after a few applications that this does contain phenoxyethonal and coconut oil which explains why I was beginning to get a few spots, so I did have to discontinue use.  As I've explained in previous posts, this preservative really irritates my skin (sometimes causing extreme sensitivity) so I just can't use it on my more delicate areas like face, scalp, or hands.  And coconut oil and me just don't really get on nine times out of ten.  Totally gutted, as I wanted to see how it worked longer term.  I have put this in the "Tim pile" as he is not sensitive to the ingredients and his dry skin always loves a bit of a pamper.  He has been having this applied most evenings, and so far so good.  It definitely is moisturizing, and gives a great boost to his skin.

Ingredients: Aqua, palm free vegetable glycerin, emulsifying wax NF (cetearyl alcohol & polysorbate 60), organic sunflower seed oil (helianthus annuus), olive oil (olea europaea), apricot kernal oil (prunus armeniaca), coconut oil (cocos nucifera), organic shea butter (butyrospermum parkii), stearic acid, vitamin C (ascorbic acid), hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate), zinc oxide, vitamin E (tocopherol), papaya fruit extract (carica papaya), cranberry extract (vaccinium macrocarpon), strawberry extract (fragaria vesca), lemon extract (citrus medica limonum), allantoin, xanthan gum, phenoxyethanol, liquorice extract (glycyrrhiza glabra), silk peptide protein, ethylhexylglycerin, parfum

Tranquil Fields Body and Massage Oil:

I love a multi-purpose product, and this vegan friendly oil is fabulous for either moisturizing the body or for a long relaxing massage.  It's helps warm the heart and comfort the mind, making this a perfect product to keep us in summer spirits while the weather continues to cool!

Tranquil Fields, though sharing a name with the gorgeous Bubble Bath and Shower Gel (a fast favourite in our house!), has a very different smell.  While the bath product carries primarily sensual vanilla notes, this oil favors calming lavender and heady frankincense essential oils.  The effect?  A product that is ideal for a much needed relaxation session.

Breathe the fields of purple lavender weaving in strings of soft, spicy vanilla, and peacefully rest under the sweet and woody frankincense fragrance. The aroma brings you a sense of calm and inner peace and aids relaxation.

Kathleen Natural Skincare Review - Tranquil Fields Body and Massage Oil

The oil itself is the perfect balance between moisturizing and not too heavy -- it sinks in quickly and fully, and does not leave a slick residue on the skin.  I have used this post shower as an all over body treatment, and it's so soothing for both skin and senses.  I find it is especially good for evening use as the aroma is so peaceful.  I even recently gave this a run in the bath, blending a bit with its bubbly partner -- it's such a delightful treat and eases all the tension so you can drift off to bed no problem.  I've even used it as an overnight hair mask, an application that is so delightful as it protects the hair and adds a beautiful scent that you can smell even as you begin to drift off to sleep!

The bottle has a traditional essential oil 'orifice reducer'.  This means that it has a little plastic cap designed to reduce the flow to a single drop.  This is great if you want a smaller amount of oil to use, but it's not my favourite as I find it can be tricky to control as sometimes the drops come out in quick succession.  However, once you get the hang of it the whole process is pretty simple and you never really end up with too much oil which is a bonus.

Overall, this might just be my favourite of the bunch to be honest when it comes to Kathleen's skincare range, as it is so nourishing, smells heavenly, and brings the aromatherapeutic properties I look for in my beauty products.  I love items that target not just outer beauty, but inner peace of mind as well, and the Tranquil Fields Body and Massage Oil definitely fits the bill.

Ingredients: Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil*, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil*, Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil*, Rosa Canina (Rosehip) Fruit Oil*, Tocopherol (Vitamin E)***, Lavandula Angustifolia Herb oil**, Boswellia Serrata (Frankincense) Oil**, Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Extract**, Linalool**, Limonene**, Coumarin**, Geraniol**. *certified organic by Soil Association **from essential oils ***natural plant origin

Kathleen Natural Skincare Review

The Kathleen skincare range is full of products that are suited for all skin types, and I have really been enjoying exploring the brand's offerings.  Overall, I have to say I am drawn towards formulas that are a bit more aromatic and offer a mood boost like the Tranquil Fields Body and Massage Oil, but I have also liked the other skincare treats I have tried in the range and I am happy I have stepped out of my usual zone to try something new!

My biggest issue isn't actually to do with the products, but the website.  I value transparency.  In fact, it might just be my number one criteria for supporting a brand.  So when I look at some of their products that are not vegan friendly (containing silk amino acid, not specified as synthetic, for example) and still have a symbol next to the product that says "vegan friendly..."  Well, that's when I am not happy at all.  The product description does not claim that the formulation is vegan, nor does the brand itself claim to be totally VF, but the image may catch some people out and I find it misleading to have this graphic next to every single item.

Same goes for the badge stating "certified organic" -- I love that Kathleen Natural uses organic ingredients in some of their products (especially those that are 80% organic!), and I appreciate the efforts they make to find that balance between clean creations and results-driven skincare.  However, I think having a blanket claim of "certified organic" without the ingredient label always reflecting this is not the best practice.  Instead, I would love to see specifics, with every relevant ingredient marked, and a change to "including certified organic ingredients" if the product itself is not at least 70% organic.  Perhaps this is an oversight, perhaps it is a matter of digital information not being updated, perhaps it is something else.  But this is a fab range with lovely products, so I do not like seeing greenwashing tactics, whether intentional or not, utilized on their website.

Kathleen Natural labelling issues

Honestly, the products themselves are so worth checking out, and there is so much to explore in this safer beauty brand.  Just be sure to read the ingredients first, and do not just glance at the website images and think it is suited to your particular lifestyle needs because you see a label.

In terms of the products themselves, the only thing I would like to see change with the Kathleen Natural range in the future (because come on, they're pretty great overall!) is a switch from plastic bottles to glass like the body and massage oil.  While the other packaging at the moment IS able to be recycled, it is not the best option out there, and more steps could be made to make this gorgeous brand even more eco-forward.  I love how luxurious Tranquil Fields looks and feels, and it really captures the elevated nature of this brand.  Just imagine how stunning a range entirely housed within glass would be -- WOW!  And of course I would also be so happy if phenoxyethonal just disappeared altogether, but that might be a 'me' problem and I recognize that -- any thoughts??

Overall though, this is such a great beauty brand full of fab products, all of which are pretty lightweight and suitable for even those with congestion prone skin.  I especially love the body and massage oil, and find the calming notes such a perfect addition to my daily routine.  In a world full of chaos and uncertainty, I can rely on Tranquil Fields to ease the tension, at least for a while.

I'll definitely be checking out more of their items in the future, so I would love to hear your thoughts on Kathleen Natural -- what are your favourites??  Anything in particular I should test out next?  Let me know! xx

  4. I agree with you regarding the labelling. "Vegan-friendly" should mean no animal products.

    1. I'm sure it's an oversight rather than an intentional thing - they use the same little infograph on every page. just needs to be updated and thought it was important to point out :)
