Dr. Hauschka Review: Makeup Haul!

Getting a delivery is always exciting, but when that parcel is filled to the brim with makeup from Dr. Hauschka, it is like Christmas all over again!  I have been trying to up my makeup game ever since doing my Full Face With Inika challenge, and so I decided to invest in just a few more products to help myself out on that quest.  Did I go a little overboard?  Probably, but just look at this haul!

Dr. Hauschka is a natural beauty brand from Germany that is acknowledged as being the original name in natural skincare.  They have over 70 years of experience creating high quality products that harness the power of the earth.  Not only do they use only natural, organic, and bio-dynamic plant ingredients, they are cruelty free, sustainably and ethically sourced, and free from all the common nasties like synthetic fragrance, preservatives, dyes, mineral oils, silicones, PEGs, and parabens.

Dr. Hauschka also have a very detailed and extensive FAQ that answered a lot of my more specific questions such as are they free from GMOs (the answer is yes, they are GMO-free!).  I love the transparency, and I love how willing to answer concerns they are.  How could I say no to a record like that?

I have to admit I have far too many eyeshadows, eyeliners and lipsticks already, but I have not ever tried Dr. Hauschka's makeup range so I wanted to test a little of everything.  I ended up selecting an eyeshadow trio, bronzer, pressed powder, lipstick, and an eyeliner, then after a short wait I had my little bundle ready and waiting to be used!

I like the simplicity of the outer packaging for all the products, and appreciate how easy it was to find the information on everything.  Sometimes I really struggle to find the use by or best before dates on items, but these were very clearly marked which was a huge plus.  I also really like how the design carries over onto the product itself.

The Eye Definer is really interesting, as it is double ended with one side having the pencil tip and the other having a sort of sponge.  To be completely honest I wasn't 100% sure what this sponge was for until I looked it up, and you are meant to use the 'applicator' to smudge or blend as desired.  I think this is probably ideal for when you are trying to make a smoky eye, or if you are like me and make a total mess of your eyeliner and need to erase your mistakes!

The pencil itself is great, as it fits into a standard sharpener (unlike some of the others I have tried like Bellapierre), is vegan-friendly, and the formula is just right.  The consistency is thick enough to have staying power but light enough to feel comfortable and natural.  I would say it is pretty creamy, which helps make it go on really smoothly which I love as it makes everything easier for me when applying.

I chose shade 01, Black, as I am pretty traditional in my day to day looks, and black tends to be my go to for both casual looks and for special occasions.  It is a really nice deep charcoal, and I have a feeling I will be buying this again in the future, especially since the price is so reasonable.

Ingredients: Hydrogenated Jojoba Oil, Mica, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Canola Oil, Sclerocarya Birrea Seed Oil, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Pyrus Cydonia Peel/Fruit Wax, Diatomaceous Earth (Solum Diatomeae), Glyceryl Caprylate, Anthyllis Vulneraria Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Bark/Leaf Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Fragrance (Parfum)*, Citronellol*, Geraniol*, Linalool*, Tocopherol, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Iron Oxides (CI 77499).*from natural essential oils

I can't lie, I definitely chose the wrong colour of lipstick for myself this time.  Azalea (06) is an intense fusion between pink and ruby, and would give any look a vibrant pop.  I don't love this shade for myself, as it is very bright and pigmented and pretty much the opposite of what I usually wear.  I tend to go for more understated tones (except that time I opted for a dark blue lipstick...) and misjudged this one for sure.

That being said, the lipstick itself is gorgeous.  It is similar to a shade of Bellapierre lippy I have been attempting to use up forever called Burlesque, and just from looking at it I can tell the formula will be similar -- moisturizing, opaque in one sweep, with a long lasting cream or satin finish.  I haven't used this on myself as I know it won't suit me and I would rather it go to someone who will enjoy it, so instead of swatching it and making the product unhygienic I found a great review you can check out if you want to read more about it!

Ingredients: Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Lanolin, Beeswax (Cera Alba), Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Rosa Damascena Flower Extract, Anthyllis Vulneraria Extract, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Mica, Hydrogenated Jojoba Oil, Rosa Canina Fruit Extract, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Root Extract, Rosa Damascena Flower Wax, Fragrance (Parfum)*, Linalool*, Benzyl Benzoate*, Farnesol*, Limonene*, Geraniol*, Eugenol*, Benzyl Salicylate*, Benzyl Alcohol*, Citronellol*, Lecithin, Silica, Alumina, Carmine (CI 75470), Iron Oxides (CI 77491), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891).*from natural essential oils

These Dr. Hauschka compacts won me over immediately, not only because the pressed powder comes with an adorable poof, but because they call back memories of my mum getting ready in the car.  I love that these have stuck to a classic look with the click open case and inner mirror, and the sleekness of everything makes them look and feel really elegant.

I was feeling optimistic about the upcoming summer when I placed my order, so I bought shade 02 (Chestnut) for the pressed powder, with the hope that my skin will become at least a tiny bit less pasty when the sunshine decides to stay.  However, I can happily say that for once in my life I don't think I even really need the lightest shade available!  To be fair, Chestnut is still very light, but I was excited nonetheless.  This will be perfect for me all year round, but even more so over the summer as I start to catch some rays (with SPF applied of course!).

The powder definitely has some yellow undertones to it, but as I am neutral that doesn't matter.  However, if you are looking for a compact powder that is ideal for pink tones, I would probably suggest going for Macadamia over this shade.  When you apply it, the powder is really light and blends perfectly, and the powder pad is so soft and doesn't irritate your skin whatsoever.

I don't ever really wear foundation, but I could see myself getting used to applying this product every day, and for just over £20 for the compact, I wouldn't feel like I am breaking bank at all!

Ingredients: Talc, Mica, Silk (Serica) Powder, Diatomaceous Earth (Solum Diatomeae), Magnesium Stearate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Anthyllis Vulneraria Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Bark/Leaf Extract, Silica, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Fragrance (Parfum)*, Limonene*, Citronellol*, Linalool*, Geraniol*, Benzyl Benzoate*, Benzyl Salicylate*, Farnesol*, Citral*, Coumarin*, Eugenol*, Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Ultramarines (CI 77007).*from natural essential oils

The bronzing powder only came in one shade, so there wasn't much option here and I just had to trust it would work for me.  I do think the colour is slightly too dark for me, but by applying slightly less product to my brush it comes out okay.  The powder has a tiny bit of shimmer to it, so it gives a natural glow without screaming "look I'm wearing makeup!" -- perfect for me!  Overall I am happy with this, and as it is out of my comfort zone, I give myself two thumbs of for trying something new.

I know I mentioned in my Inika post that I had never attempted contour, but I'm thinking this bronzing powder might just be my opportunity to give it a go.  Should I be brave and take the leap??  Let me know in the comments below, and maybe I will attempt my second full face tutorial!

Ingredients: Talc, Diatomaceous Earth (Solum Diatomeae), Silk (Serica) Powder, Kaolin, Anthyllis Vulneraria Extract, Magnesium Stearate, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Mica, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Bark/Leaf Extract, Silica, Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf Extract, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Root Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Fragrance (Parfum)*, Limonene*, Linalool*, Citronellol*, Geraniol*, Coumarin*, Citral*, Benzyl Benzoate*, Farnesol*, Eugenol*, Benzyl Salicylate*, Tocopherol, Ascorbyl Dipalmitate, Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891).*from natural essential oils

Last up in my Dr. Hauschka makeup haul is the gorgeous eyeshadow trio.  I chose set 04 (Sunstone) which combines three complimentary shades of very natural tones.  The colours are meant to be ideal for creating 'brilliant, sparkling eyes' and work to reflect, highlight, and enliven.  I honestly love this combination, as they are perfect for both work and play, and they do not have any shimmer to them which is a big change for me.

I love that there are instructions (though very brief!) on the box, as I am not always sure how sets like this are meant to be used.  The first pot, the lightest, is for application from the upper eyelid to the lower eyebrows.  The next one, the pink, is for the middle of the upper lid, and the final slot with the darkest colour you draw across from the outer corner of the eye into the crease and then below the lower lashes.  Simple enough to follow even for a relative beginner like myself!

Ingredients: Colour 01 Talc, Mica, Magnesium Stearate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Silk (Serica) Powder, Diatomaceous Earth (Solum Diatomeae), Silica, Anthyllis Vulneraria Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Bark/Leaf Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Fragrance (Parfum)*, Citronellol*, Geraniol*, Linalool*, Citral*, Eugenol*, Tin Oxide, Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891). Colour 02 Talc, Mica, Magnesium Stearate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Silk (Serica) Powder, Diatomaceous Earth (Solum Diatomeae), Silica, Anthyllis Vulneraria Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Bark/Leaf Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Fragrance (Parfum)*, Citronellol*, Geraniol*, Linalool*, Citral*, Eugenol*, Tin Oxide, Carmine (CI 75470), Iron Oxides (CI 77491), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891). Colour 03 Talc, Mica, Magnesium Stearate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Silk (Serica) Powder, Diatomaceous Earth (Solum Diatomeae), Silica, Anthyllis Vulneraria Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Bark/Leaf Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Fragrance (Parfum)*, Citronellol*, Geraniol*, Linalool*, Citral*, Eugenol*, Tin Oxide, Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891).*from natural essential oils

I am really enjoying using all these new natural goodies, and couldn't be more pleased with the Dr. Hauschka makeup range.  It has lived up to my expectations, and I love that while the products are all really high quality and both look and feel like high end luxury items, they don't have a crazy price tag.  Nothing I bought cost more than £22, while everything I have used feels like it would be at least £45+!  And even better, there are no synthetic nasties to be found in anything.

While all the products are in plastic packaging, I am hopeful to reuse the compacts to try my hand at making some of my own makeup and to decant some of my eyeshadow stash for easy transport and shade matching.  Plus, I can always keep the eyeliner casing to use the sponge smudger -- I will add it to my pot of brushes when the liner itself is used up!

If you have not yet had a look at the Dr. Hauschka makeup range, it is well worth having a browse through -- they have so many beautiful things, and have even just released a Limited Edition Purple Light line that combines fine art with cosmetics.

Which product is the one you would love to get your hands on?  I would love to hear your thoughts on Dr Hauschka down in the comments below!

  5. As those have said, this brand was a mystery to me, but it sounds like it’s been proved to help the skin rather then sinking in and causing skin problems.
